Biography and Education
Clinical Biography
Alisa M. Coker, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon in the Texas Center for Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery within UT Health Austin’s General and Gastrointestinal Surgery Clinic. With over a decade of experience in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery, she specializes in treating all types of hernias and benign foregut disorders. Additionally, Dr. Coker is an associate professor and the Directory of Robotic Surgery and Education for the Dell Medical School Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at The University of Texas at Austin, where she leads institutional efforts to advance robotic surgical training and program development.
Dr. Coker earned her dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of Colorado Denver and her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She completed an internship in general surgery at the University of Southern California and both a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of California San Diego.
Dr. Coker previously served as faculty at Johns Hopkins University, where she held multiple leadership roles in robotic surgery and surgical education. She is nationally recognized for developing innovative curricula in robotic surgery and has trained countless residents and practicing surgeons in safe and effective adoption of new technologies. Her clinical and research interests focus on advancing robotic and minimally invasive techniques, surgical education, and credentialing. Her work has been published in leading journals, including Surgical Endoscopy and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). She is an active member of multiple professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the Americas Hernia Society, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, where she contributes to national guidelines and education.
