Biography and Education
Clinical Biography
Steve Steffensen, MD, is a board-certified behavioral neurologist in UT Health Austin’s Comprehensive Memory Center. He specializes in recognizing, diagnosing, and treating the full spectrum of neurocognitive disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and its variants, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, rapidly progressive dementia syndromes, corticobasal degeneration, and other forms of atypical parkinsonism. Additionally, Dr. Steffensen is an associate professor in both the Dell Medical School Department of Neurology and the Dell Medical School Department of Population Health. He also serves as Director of the Neurology Clerkship for the Dell Medical School Department of Neurology.
Dr. Steffensen earned his medical degree from The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and completed a residency in neurology at the National Naval Medical Center. He is board-certified in neurology and behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry.
Dr. Steffensen has held national leadership roles, including serving as Chief of Innovation for the Military Health System and as a senior advisor to the U.S. Army Surgeon General, where he focused on advancing health system innovation and supporting the needs of service members and veterans. Earlier in his career, he collaborated with Johns Hopkins University on initiatives connecting academic medicine with federal health priorities. His academic interests include cognitive disorders, medical education, and the history of neurology in clinical practice. He has received multiple teaching awards, including recognition as a Distinguished Teaching Professor from The University of Texas System.
